Learn how you can enjoy watching sea otters in the wild without disturbing them.

Sea otters are protected by Endangered Species Act, Marine Mammal Protection Act and state laws. Disturbing them is considered as violation of state/federal laws and you may be fined.

Keep below tips in mind.
  1. Keep a good distance (at least 5 kayak lengths) .
  2. Do not point the head of the watercraft to the otters.
  3. Pass parallel to the otters.
  4. When they raise their head or watch you, it means you are already too close.
  5. Bring a camera with a telephoto lens. People who try to take pictures with smartphone tend to get too close to the sea otters.
  6. Do not make loud noise and be a good visitor.
  7. Drive carefully and watch out for wildlife. There are two sites in Moss Landing, California where wild sea otters are known to cross the road. (Moss Landing Rd and Hwy 1, and Hwy 1 and Jetty Rd)
